If you board horses or care for them daily, knowing the basics of common pain relievers is essential. Two of the most used anti-inflammatory medications in horse care are Banamine and Bute. Both are NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), but they’re not interchangeable—and using the right one matters for your horse’s safety and health.
At Borg Farms, a trusted horse boarding facility in Colorado Springs, we believe education is key to top-notch horse care. Here’s what you need to know:
🟢 When Vets Recommend Banamine (Flunixin Meglumine):
Colic and internal (visceral) pain relief
Reducing high fevers from infection
Soft tissue inflammation and swelling
🔴 When NOT to Use Banamine:
For lameness or joint pain (Bute is better)
In dehydrated horses (especially during colic)
Intramuscularly (IM) – can cause severe abscesses
🟢 When Vets Recommend Bute (Phenylbutazone):
Joint pain, arthritis, and lameness
Muscle soreness, navicular, and laminitis
Recovery from musculoskeletal injuries
🔴 When NOT to Use Bute:
For colic or internal pain (Banamine is better)
In horses with kidney/liver issues without vet monitoring
Long-term use without bloodwork and ulcer prevention
How to Choose:
Condition | Best Option |
Colic or Fever | Banamine |
Joint Pain or Lameness | Bute |
Laminitis or Navicular | Bute |
General Soft Tissue Inflammation | Banamine |
⚠️ A Few Important Tips:
Always consult a veterinarian before giving either drug.
Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time.
Never mix NSAIDs or give more than prescribed.
Watch for signs of ulcers, dehydration, or reduced appetite
